1. Hendersons
Established in 1968, Hendersons is the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Edinburgh. The business has since turned into a mini-empire with three lovely locations across the city. The original Henderson’s Bistro, situated in the heart of Edinburgh, is now 100% vegan. There’s a big focus on using seasonal vegetables and organic ingredients. 25 Thistle St, Edinburgh EH2 1DX, UK
For a nourishing start to your day, head to Henderson’s Salad Table Restaurant. The Salad Table is famous for its vegan and vegetarian breakfasts, but it’s also a great place to have dinner. Right above the restaurant is Henderson’s Shop & Deli – a cosy place to grab some lunch. 94 Hanover St, Edinburgh EH2 1DR, UK
Holyrood is the newest branch of Hendersons. This is the branch to visit for hearty vegetarian food in a colourful and relaxed setting. Close to Arthur’s Seat and the Palace of Holyrood, it’s a great place to stop before exploring Edinburgh’s landmarks. Try the turmeric latte. It’s warming, delicious, and just a little bit sweet. 67 Holyrood Rd, Edinburgh EH8 8AU, UK
2. David Bann
David Bann is one of the more upmarket vegetarian restaurants in Edinburgh. All sleek and minimalist inside, this place is perfect for date night. The set menu is global and creative, so expect everything from Mediterranean influences to Asian flavours. There are some vegan options and the food is likely to satisfy even non-veggies. There’s also an extensive wine list and a good selection of bottled beer.
Expect to pay a little more than you would in other vegetarian restaurants in Edinburgh. But eating here feels like a treat. 56-58 St Mary’s St, Edinburgh EH1 1SX, UK
3. Novapizza Vegetarian Kitchen
In the chilly depths of an Edinburgh winter, an Italian restaurant seems even more appealing. Luckily for veggies, Novapizza serves pizza, pasta and all of the cosiness. The first Italian vegetarian pizzeria in Edinburgh, this place is small but full of charm. There are separate menus for vegetarians and vegans and loads of options. Pasta dishes include vegetarian Bolognese and vegan gnocchi al pesto, while “pepperoni” is one of the available pizza toppings. There are also gluten-free pizzas and quite a few gluten-free pasta dishes. 42 Howe St, Edinburgh EH3 6TH, UK
4. Juice Warrior
Juice Warrior is a shop rather than a restaurant. But it’s a great place to go for a healthy snack or three. Scotland’s first certified organic juice company, Juice Warrior was set up by a Glaswegian couple. In their shop on East Market Street, you can try their cold-pressed juices, salads, smoothie bowls, and raw desserts. It’s all organic, so there’s no need to feel guilty when you’re gobbling up a chai-spiced caramel slice. 15 E Market St, Edinburgh EH8 8FS, UK
5. Forest Café
If you’re after something budget-friendly and belly-filling, the Forest Café is ideal. Lunch options include a falafel mean and the Forest Burrito. Everything on the menu is vegetarian with a few additional vegan options. But the Forest is more than a café – it’s a volunteer-run arts and events project. Creative workshops, classes, and quirky events all happen in the big block of studios. The Forest is non-profit and most of the funding comes from the café, so eating there is a great way to support their projects. 141 Lauriston Pl, Edinburgh EH3 9JN, UK
6. Kalpna
Kalpna is one of the longest-running vegetarian restaurants in Edinburgh. A family run business, it specialises in South Indian cuisine and thali. There’s an emphasis on fresh vegetables and ingredients are sourced locally, where possible. Vegans will also find some options on the menu. Kalpna’s lunchtime buffet is very popular – for £8.50, you can fill your plate with salads, curries, rice, various starters, and bread. The service is warm and friendly, making it a really enjoyable place to eat. 2-3 St Patrick Square, Edinburgh EH8 9EZ, UK
